Elementary students attend music weekly. Students are taught musical notes using the Sophege method. Students also use Orff instruments and Boomwhackers to work on rhythm.
The Academy Junior Choir is for fifth grade magnet students. The Junior Choir members audition in the spring each year and work an extra hour a week with the music teacher to prepare choral music pieces. A uniform is required for each choir member. Junior Choir members will have a few after school rehearsals and school and community performances. This is a non-graded class.
The Academy Chamber Choir is for sixth grade magnet students. All students selected for Chamber Choir based on an audition will participate in school concerts, performances in the community, and Ensemble and Choral Festivals. These activities are curricular, and, therefore, participation is mandatory. Students will earn City Choral Festival. A uniform is required for each choir member. Chamber choir will have additional after school rehearsals.
The Academy Senior Choir is for seventh and eighth grade magnet students. Students audition in the spring each year and will participate in school concerts, performances in the community, and Ensemble and Choral Festivals. These activities are curricular, and, therefore participation is mandatory. Students will earn a grade for choir. Choir students may also choose to participate in optional activities such as All-City Choral Festival and All-State Choral Festival. A uniform is required for each choir member. The Academy Senior Choir ranks as one of the top choirs in the State.
