Magnet students in PreK through fifth grade explore weekly various visual art techniques and artists. The goal of art education at the Academy is to guide students toward purposeful artistic expression and informed artistic response. The Visual Arts program is a discipline-based curriculum with content standards addressing History, Criticism, Aesthetics, and Production. The curriculum is designed to develop perceptual awareness, to encourage students to value art as an important realm of human experience, to have students recognize relationships between art and other disciplines, to produce works of art appropriate to developmental ages of students, and to enable students to make and justify statements and judgments about artwork.
Magnet middle school students will interview with the Arts instructor at the beginning of each year and answer brief questions to demonstrate abilities in advanced art techniques. Students have opportunities to show their art in exhibits, competitions, and special events during the year.
