Our 3rd-grade students became paleontologists for a day. They uncovered our planet's rich geologic history by 1) locating and identifying fossils in a local fossil bed, 2) interpreting the geologic time scale using fossil samples and, 3) producing fossil replicas.

The student paleontologists also worked to determine and distinguish types of fossils and collect fossils on a Land Trust nature trail, distinguish between an omnivore, herbivore, or carnivore by comparing animal skulls, describing how fossils provide evidence of prehistoric plant life and examining tree rings to discover how the environment influences tree growth (traits).
