September in art is all about weaving! Students learned about weaving terminology and discussed the importance of woven textiles throughout history. We looked at early looms and the most common forms of weaving. Students were surprised to learn that all our clothes are woven!

Learning to weave is a new skill for most students and was challenging, but they were able to try a new skill and problem solve! Understanding how yarns go over and under to create a woven design made math connections and weaving helps kids with fine motor skills, patterning, hand eye coordination, and listening skills. With students using so much technology, weaving was a great change of pace and required slower movements and concentration. Weaving also gives students a sense of achievement as the woven threads grow on our looms while working on their kinesthetic and tactile skills.
