Providence Elementary opened for the 2005-2006 school year. It began as a K-8 school and because of ever increasing enrollment 8 additional classrooms were soon added. Providence was split into both Providence Elementary School and Providence Middle School with separate administration yet housed in the same building. It wasn't long after the addional classes and split into two schools that Providence soon ran out of classroom space once again. A decision was made to phase out Providence Middle School and move the students to Williams Middle School which would keep all students in the same school feeder pattern. Over the course of three years Providence Middle School was phased out and Providence Elementary School took over the entire building. Providence is now a P-5 school and is the largest elementary school in the Huntsville City School District.
During all this growth Providence took steps to become an International Baccalaureate School and was officially approved for the 2016-2017 school year. Please see the sidebar for Magnet/IB schools for more information.
Providence offers the IB Primary Years Programme, focusing on engaging the whole child in learning through inquiry. All Providence Students explore six transdisciplinary themes that develop knowledge and skills needed in our global society. As an IB World School, Providence offers Chinese Mandarin instruction to every child, Pre-K through fifth grade.
