Dear Blossomwood Families,

Thanks to everyone for helping make the Fall Festival a great time! It was a beautiful day accompanied by a wonderful crowd!

I am often asked, "What can we be doing at home to help my child?" There are a couple of things that can be done daily to increase your child's academic success.

  1. Reading: Your child needs to read independently or with an adult for at least 15-20 minutes every day at home. Your child could even read to a sibling, a pet, or a stuffed animal for practice. If your child doesn't have a library book, he/she can log in to MyOn which will provide online access to books.
  2. Math: Encourage your child to work on basic math facts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. As you know, these can never be practiced enough. Khan Academy and Moby Max are great online resources that we use at school, and they can be used at home, too.
  3. Feedback: All students need feedback and encouragement. Regardless of the grade level, please continue to ask your child to explain their thinking as they work through assignments and situations. This can be done by requiring them to verbalize or put their thoughts in writing.
  4. Journal/Illustrating: Many students can benefit from putting their thoughts on paper either in words or pictures. For example, older students often enjoy writing an alternate ending or writing a pretend letter to one of the characters from their book/story. Others enjoy writing a paragraph of two or three sentences about what they thought about the book. Lastly, younger students often enjoy illustrating or drawing their favorite scene from the book/story. Bottomline, we want them to think about what they are reading.

Sincerely,
Bradley A. Scott, Ed.D.
