There are five main purposes of the NJHS: to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; to encourage responsible citizenship; and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.
How to Join / Membership Requirements
Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a middle school student. During second semester, 7th and 8th grade students who meet the national requirement of having a cumulative average of 85 or higher are invited to apply for membership in the National Junior Honor Society. Once invited, students are evaluated by their personal statement, scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. A five-member faculty panel evaluates students for induction into the National Junior Honor Society.
Using the HCS National Junior Honor Society Rubric, student candidates will be scored based on their personal statement covering leadership, service, character, and citizenship.
-Leadership must be shown in classrooms or in the community
-Up to ten hours of service must be completed or proposed with adult sponsorship
-Character is scored from the number of suspensions, office referrals, detentions, and/or silent lunches
-Citizenship is scored from students' involvement in school or community teams, clubs and/or organizations
